Speeding, Overloading Main Cause for Benue Boat Disaster – Oyetola

The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic boat accident that occurred on December 15, 2024, when a wooden boat capsized on River Benue, claiming numerous lives. The accident took place in Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State, as the boat was ferrying passengers to Nasarawa State.

The commercial wooden boat, powered by an outboard engine, was reportedly carrying between 70 and 80 passengers, primarily traders returning to Odenyi in Nasarawa Toto Local Government Area, after attending the Ocholonya Market in Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State.

In his statement, Minister Oyetola lamented the alarming frequency of boat accidents on Nigerian waterways. He stressed the critical need for caution among boat operators and users, as well as the urgent implementation of stricter safety measures.

The minister called on state and local governments, community leaders, and stakeholders to collaborate with the Ministry and the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) to prioritize safety and prevent future tragedies. “NIWA’s operational code mandates adherence to safety regulations, such as wearing life jackets and avoiding overloading of boats. Any party found neglecting these rules, thereby endangering lives and property, should face fines or prosecution under the law,” he stated.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the ill-fated boat, owned and operated by one Mr. Abubakar Muhammed, was en route from Ocholonya community market to Odenyi. Eyewitness accounts indicate that the accident was caused by excessive speed and overloading.

The minister’s remarks underscore the urgency of addressing safety lapses to ensure that Nigeria’s waterways become safer for travel and commerce.
