The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has announced plans to review its operational procedures to enhance safety awareness after Saturday’s tragic tanker explosion at Dikko Junction, Gurara, Niger State.
The incident resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries, with scores of residents affected.
Mr. Farouk Ahmed, Chief Executive of NMDPRA, represented by Dr. Mustapha Lamorde, Executive Director of Health, Safety, Environment, and Community at NMDPRA, disclosed this on Sunday during an inspection of the explosion site. Ahmed confirmed that the authority would conduct further investigations to establish the root cause and develop preventive measures to avert similar occurrences.
“From the preliminary report, we understand that a road accident caused a spill, and during fuel scooping by residents, an explosion occurred. This tragic event highlights the need for improved safety awareness and operational standards,” Ahmed said. He emphasized that the NMDPRA would collaborate with stakeholders such as the National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), and its Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) branch to strengthen safety protocols and increase public awareness about the dangers of fuel scooping.
Ahmed assured that the review of standard operating procedures (SOPs) would incorporate advanced safety measures, including regular safety training within the sector. The focus will also be on ensuring proper handling and transportation of petroleum products to prevent accidents.
The NMDPRA team also visited the Musa Yar’Adua Memorial Hospital, Sabon-Wuse, where some victims of the explosion were receiving medical care. Dr. Musa Lafaruma, Head of Hospital Services, confirmed that 28 victims were brought to the hospital, with three fatalities reported. Many other victims were transferred to different medical facilities by their families.
This tragic incident underscores the critical importance of stringent safety measures in the petroleum and transportation sectors. The NMDPRA’s proactive approach to reviewing and enhancing safety protocols is a welcomed step toward preventing future occurrences and protecting lives.
