The first thing you need to do is get a mentor, someone who know much about HSE Profession and can easily put you through.

Mentorship according to wikipedia is a relationship in which a more experienced or more knowledgeable person helps to guide a less experienced or less knowledgeable person.

The mentor may be older or younger than the person being mentored, but they must have a certain area of expertise. however, if you want to grow in the profession you need a mentor that will guide you. the area of guide include professional career path you can follow, how to go about sourcing for job, guide on how to carry out job responsibilities, recommendations, etc. if you must grow in the profession, you need a mentor.

Exposure is one of the most important thing in any career, the more exposed you, the more offers you are likely to get often.

To grow you need to join HSE professionals groups as much as are related to your area of interest. there, you will have the privilege to learn, interact and network with senior colleagues. These groups can be on different social platform like whatsapp, twitter, linkedin, telegram, slack, etc.

3.Learn to network with people

Networking can not be over emphasized. When you join a professional network don’t just be a silent learner. Contribute to the group in term of inputs, thumbs up, likes, comments on nice posts is a okay. For example, If you are following an HSE Professional on LinkedIn and they post often ( Contribute by commenting nicely, learn from it, sometimes you can share their post also), from there you can establish direct relationship with some senior professionals. You need to grow, both in learning and recommendation. linkedin which is one of the most invaluable professional social platform, invite professionals to join your network. they may not be only HSE professionals, you can equally invite human resource specialists and other influencers. This will boost your visibility on the platform.

 

4.Have high influencing ability.

You remember the first thing we spoke about is having a mentor, this is because you need to learn. For you to be a grown HSE Professional, you need high influencing power ; you need to be able to inspire and encourage people in your field. A typical example is sharing how you solved a safety problem and how the solution helped your company.

Also, You need to read books written by HSE Professional as this will help you learn and gain more influencing power.

Be serious but not to serious, make sometime to catch fun with people by sharing funny memes which relates to safety and quality. People often remember things that made them smile.

5. Stay where you are valued .

While working on growing to be a better HSE Professional, stay in an area and company where you are valued.
When you are around people who values your work, you definitely want to grow and expand. You want to give more and learn more.

You are not perfect and that is okay, be open to learning but also make sure your learning is having a positive impact on your work mentality.

Stay where you are valued, this is very important in building your HSE career. Your career growth is dependent on your ability to learn and your ability to learn is dependent on the environment you fix yourself into.
