Safety issues caused by air pollution to working environment are the main concern when it come to Environmental Safety.
The constant release of pollutants into the air has very negative effects on nature and on human-health. Those long-term and medium-term effects have become problems that are difficult to solve, also a lot of this has caused more detrimental result to our working environment.
We will be discussing few safety issues that air pollution can cause to our working environment.
1. Respiratory problems to both employers and employees.
It is probably one of the most obvious and worrying effects for human beings. Pollutants can cause respiratory illnesses and allergies ranging from coughs to asthma, cancer or emphysema and inability to breath well which may lead to death.
Toxic agents can be directly inhaled which in return affects the lungs and other organs that make up the respiratory system. Also, poor oxygenation can lead to cardiovascular problems. Poor oxygenation can be caused by the natural oxygen been mixing with unhealthy air in our environment.
2. Exposure of skin to radiation
Skin damage is also one of the safety problems air pollutions can pose on our working environment.
Many of the chemical intolerances directly affect people’s skin. However, one of the worst damages is Skin Cancer. This disease in many cases develops from the direct incidence of ultraviolet light rays on the skin.
The ozone layer acts as a filter for those rays. If the ozone layer is thinner, the effectiveness of the body filters decreases, allowing the passage of rays, which are very harmful to human.
All those important effects can increase if their causes are not rapidly acted upon. Most of them are the result of very intense, polluting and uncontrolled industrial activity.
Organization has the duty to ensure that pollutants are not dropped within their environment. They are to ensure that all these pollutants are packed and trashed using the most effective methods.
3. Sensitivity, intolerance and allergies
People develop intolerances and allergies to many agents present in the atmosphere and to other external agents that can go through due to the holes in the ozone layer. This is because there is a high concentration of chlorofluorocarbons that alter the thickness of the ozone layer.
Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) are released using aerosols, industrial refrigerants, solvents and other very harmful chemicals. This does only pose side effects to the health of workers but also their ability to function effectively.
4. Deterioration of material and building.
Air pollutants have the capability to deteriorate and change the constitution of building materials, so many buildings and infrastructures have gone weakened, eroded or destroyed at an accelerated rate over time. Occurrence like acid rain, climate change and smog all damage the Earth surface.
5. Global warming
This is almost the most concerning issues for environmentalists and scientists. Global warming is a direct consequence of the greenhouse effect, which is produced by the high emission of CO2 and methane into the atmosphere. Most of these emissions are produced by the industry, so this can be remedied by social responsibilities and actions taken by companies and factories.
All these mentioned side effects can be controlled if individual organizations are endued with the ability to control and be sensitive to what they drop, burn and leave within the environment.
