Ways to determine an acceptable level of safety in aviation

When an aviation service provider evaluates their risk to operational safety, they have to ask themselves a very pointed, and sometimes uncomfortable question like “What is our risk appetite?” What is the appropriate standard we need to offer?

The term Acceptable Level of Safety (ALoS) defines an aviation service provider’s minimum level of acceptable risk for a given safety issue. “Acceptable” means the need for no further mitigatory actions on the part of the service provider for the safety concern in question. This determination will be made based on the probability and severity of the evaluated safety concern.

2. Assessment of acceptable and not acceptable risk
Consistent assessment of what is acceptable in the field of safety is very important as employees, supervisors, managers, and safety people are to ensure that what they stand for is consistent with what they practice. So the need for consistent assessment of practices, functions, and fixing of duties according to what is constantly demanded must be followed up by the organization.

3. Setting the benchmark
Benchmark for residual assessments needs to be set to allow the need for exposure, fostering of the growth and development of the organization towards what is required as acceptable. When an organization sets a benchmark, it helps to keep in check what the employees place as a priority all the time. What needs to be fixed and what needs to be done away with.

4. Determining organizational authority

The need to determine the organizational authority level required to accept identified risk will also help the organization be in confirmation of what the employees are into at all times. Organizational authority helps to teach and put the level of what is acceptable and what is not acceptable in check, and this helps to improve the development of aviation safety all the time.
