Afriland Tower, Mandilas Market Fire: ISPON Condoles Families, Calls for Stronger Safety Measures

The Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria (ISPON) has expressed deep concern over the tragic fire outbreaks that engulfed Afriland Tower and Mandilas Market in Lagos on September 16, 2025, resulting in loss of lives, injuries, and damage to property.

In a public statement, ISPON President, Chief Dr. Udezi Stephen L.A, described the incident as a painful reminder of the importance of safety management in Nigeria’s built environment.

“On behalf of ISPON, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased, and we stand in solidarity with the injured, displaced, and all those directly or indirectly affected by this unfortunate event,” Dr. Udezi stated.

He commended the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services, emergency responders, and security agencies for their swift intervention, noting that their timely efforts helped to contain the scale of the disaster.

According to ISPON, the incident underscores the urgent need for robust evacuation plans, functional fire safety equipment including sprinklers, alarms, extinguishers, and hydrants, as well as routine fire drills and safety training for occupants of high-rise buildings.

The association also emphasized the importance of strict adherence to building codes, safety audits, and risk assessments that prioritize human life above all else.

“As Nigeria’s foremost professional body on safety matters, ISPON reaffirms its commitment to supporting government, regulators, and private sector stakeholders in strengthening fire prevention systems, emergency preparedness, and disaster response capacity,” the statement added.

ISPON pledged to continue championing safety awareness, training, and certification to minimize the risk of such tragedies in the future.

The organisation concluded by praying for the souls of the departed and strength for the bereaved families.
