In every field where safety and life is concerned, there is always major and highly essential functions which give birth to other minimum functions. These key functions are the one that will dictate how far the company will expand in term of staffs, business growth, audience reach and most importantly profit to be made.
HSE industry is no way different, as in HSE industry there are lot of major function which is very essential for the professional to always put into consideration but we will discuss the top five which are priority at all time.
1. Monitoring and assessing hazardous and unsafe situations.
Every employer of labour owns their employees one major thing at first , and this is safety. No individual want to work in an environment which is not safe either physically, biologically or in term of operation performances .
The first duty of an HSE Professional is to make sure the environment is safe enough and safe for all. This will involve him or her monitoring and assessing all this situations to ensure stability can be put to check at all time.

2. Developing measures to assure personnel safety.
HSE personnel will often say accident are preventable but if we really need to look into work accident such as technical accident, mechanical accident from machines or biological accidents from workers; we will realise some few time, certain accident may not be preventable. But in a situation where such accident happens, the safety Professional must have outlined measures and control that can be immediately used to put the situation into check and calm the environment down.
3.Correct unsafe acts or conditions through the regular line of authority.
Every health industry have principles and guidelines that regulates situations in the company. For example , a safety officer or manager should ensure that availability of fire extinguisher is priority, a situation where a little spark causes small fire can be regulated with the presence of the fire extinguisher.

Also the use of personal Protective equipment at the right time must be prioritized as the safety of the staff is essential. A safety Professional must be able to speak to every line in authority to ensure things are done correctly at all time.
4. May exercise emergency authority to prevent or stop unsafe acts when immediate action is required.
In food safety, a quality control officer can work into the production room to stop the process of production if he or she realise that such production may cost the company a fortune or even affect the health of the customer .
Likewise in HSE, a safety Professional can at any time stop a certain action if he realise the safety of the company, staff or the environment is at stake . This ability to stop action with immediate effect must be excercised by safety Professional at anytime he notices anything contrary to safety law and guidelines.
5.The Safety Officer maintains awareness of active and developing situations
A safety Professional must always be at alert. Alertness to situation within and outside the company is very crucial to be able to adjust, control, stabilize and maintain orderliness for situations which can escalate and affect the organization and what it stands for .
