In our last post, we discussed about PPE type that HSE employer should provide for their employees. We are all aware that providing safety to workers is one of the priority that HSE Professionals should key into. But then someone asked what if we provide all these materials and the employees refuses to wear them.

So today I decided to write on major reason employees refuse to wear PPE during work hours .

1. Ignorance

In the past i have a lot of mistake due to ignorance on my path. For example there are certain PPE I do not wear often because I was taught or aware of the danger my not wearing them poses to my health .

So the need to use the personal protective equipment is first prioritized when you teach your employees reasons they need to wear them , the danger of not wearing them and of course the advantages of wearing them.

2. Restriction

Some PPE are makes job difficult while wearing them, a typical example is applicable when doing the use of lifter to pick out particle when you can actually use your hand and you will be done in seconds. In this situation if the employee is not aware of the effect the particle may have on their hands, it is very likely they prefer using their hands for a faster job. This point now requires the company going for PPE with great and easy design and also to put into consideration that your worker would likely love to get their work done faster .

3. Negative Identification

When it come to HSE industry, the use of PPE can easily tell what department you are under. A situation where the employee is not proud of the department or profession may instigate their inability to wear their PPE at all time, or let just say I don’t kiss and tell, and of course I don’t like the idea of someone meeting me for the first time and then they already know what profession I’m into.

4. Poor Enforcement Ability

When PPE use is not properly enforced, compliance will be so negligible. The need for firm and reinenforcement is required when it comes to safety and wearing of equipment that can keep workers our of safety .

5. Poor Choice of PPE

The use of Poor PPE a lot of times will keep the workers from wearing them.

HSE industry is already a tedious industry to be in, adding a poor PPE which the worker will need to wear to get their job done right is definitely a reason to rebel .

The use of visibility Jacket for example , Visibility Jacket should be light and not be designed to have unnecessary design or style which can make life hard for the wearer .

If these main point are considered, there is a huge probability of having workers who will always adhere to wearing their PPE at all time.
