Lagos Fire Safety Conference to Address Gas Explosions, Other Emergencies

As Lagos prepares for the Lagos International Fire Safety Conference 2.0 (LIFSC) a tragic gas explosion at a fast-food outlet in Ajah has reinforced the urgent need for improved fire safety practices across the state.

The conference, which will bring together over 2,000 stakeholders, is designed to tackle the root causes of fire-related disasters and promote proactive safety strategies.
It aims to prevent incidents like the recent Ajah explosion that claimed the life of a 20-year-old restaurant staff and left 13 others with varying degrees of burns.
The explosion occurred around 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 19, at Orchid Road, Ajah. A suspected gas leak inside the restaurant owned by Uchechukwu Godwill Villason triggered a powerful blast and fire outbreak. Thirteen workers were rushed to Gbagada General Hospital, while one of them, Kingsley Promise from Akwa Ibom State, died while receiving treatment. Her remains have been deposited at the Mainland General Hospital mortuary in Yaba.

Police have begun investigations and urged businesses using gas-powered appliances to observe stringent safety standards to prevent further tragedies.

The LIFSC 2025 scheduled for August 12–14 at the Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island, event is a timely intervention. With the theme “Leveraging Technology & Community Engagement To Prevent Fires,” it will feature expert panels, keynote speeches, exhibitions, and workshops to educate the public and equip industries with the knowledge to reduce fire risks.

Key areas of focus will include:

Gas safety and emergency protocols in commercial and residential settings

Fire prevention practices for homes, markets, and businesses

Management of hazardous and flammable materials

Building a culture of fire safety through grassroots awareness

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service says the conference will strengthen coordination among stakeholders and deliver actionable solutions to safeguard lives and property.
