Man Collapses Playing Power Slap In Nigeria: Is This ‘Sport’ Worth the Risk?

A disturbing and highly controversial sport known as Power Slap is slowly becoming popular in Nigeria, igniting heated debates about the disregard for health and safety in the name of entertainment. This activity, which involves competitors delivering heavy slaps to each other’s faces until one concedes or is incapacitated, is being widely criticized for its dangerous nature.

The recent viral video of a Nigerian man collapsing during a Power Slap match has highlighted the grave risks of this so-called sport. His condition remains unknown, sparking public outcry and questions about why this harmful trend is gaining ground.

What Is Power Slap?

Power Slap, a sport originating in the United States, is a combat-like activity where participants trade slaps with the aim of knocking out or overwhelming their opponent. With no protective equipment for the head or face, participants absorb direct blows, leading to injuries ranging from bruises to severe head trauma, concussions, and even brain damage.

The activity has faced criticism globally, with medical experts warning of the long-term effects of repetitive head injuries, including chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), neurological disorders, and cognitive decline. Despite its popularity in certain circles, the sport remains unregulated and prioritizes shock value over participants’ well-being.

Why Safety Matters in Sports

True sports are designed to promote physical fitness, mental discipline, and teamwork while adhering to strict safety regulations. Power Slap, however, flouts all of these principles:

  • Lack of Protective Gear: No helmets or padding are used to mitigate impact.
  • Blunt Force Trauma: Participants risk permanent damage to their facial nerves, skull, and brain.
  • No Skill-Based Merit: Unlike traditional sports that require training, strategy, and skill, Power Slap revolves solely around inflicting harm.

Why Power Slap Should Be Banned in Nigeria

Nigeria must take a firm stance against activities that endanger lives. Power Slap is not a legitimate sport; it’s a reckless spectacle that glorifies violence and trivializes human safety. Allowing it to thrive here could normalize harm and set a dangerous precedent for young people.

Authorities and sports regulators must urgently prohibit Power Slap and educate the public about its risks. More emphasis should be placed on supporting safe, skill-driven sports that foster growth and well-being.

Safety is non-negotiable. As a society, we must prioritize the preservation of life over fleeting entertainment. Power Slap is a dangerous trend that has no place in Nigeria.
