Maternal Mental health and it effects in the Workplace

 

Maternal Mental health is a disorder that occurs during pregnancy or after some month after birth.

While during pregnancy, a woman suffering from maternal Mental syndrome may battle with depression, confusion and hormonal imbalance which makes the mood unstable.

After birth Mental illness during and after pregnancy can be classified into two different groups: non-psychotic disorders and psychotic disorders (psychosis).

Psychotic disorders

A mental disorder characterised by a disconnection from reality.

Psychosis may occur as a result of a psychiatric illness such as schizophrenia. In other instances, it may be caused by a health condition, medication or drug use.

Possible symptoms include delusions, hallucinations, talking incoherently and agitation. The person with the condition usually isn’t aware of his or her behaviour.

 

Nonpsychotic Disorder

A non-psychotic mental disorder is a condition of the mind that affects the way a person feels, thinks, or behaves without also causing psychosis (a sense of losing contact with reality). This is usually not as complicated as psychotic mental disorder. Symptoms include;excessive worrying, trouble sleeping or concentrating, irritability, restlessness, feelings of worthlessness, suicidal thoughts, social withdrawal, lack of energy, obsessing over unimportant details and behaving in a compulsive manner.

         Effectively on Workplace

Nonpsychotic Disorder have effect on work function such as ability to concentrate on duty, finishing a task, and being able to cooperate with Co-workers.

Employees may easily stay out of connection with their working environment.

Employees may find it difficult to accept changes, follow along with decision making.

And Employees may slow down the over all input and output effort of the organization as a whole.

SOLUTIONS

1. Company should know what to look into when they have pregnant women or nursing mothers as workers and not assume that all pregnant women are battling with Maternal Mental health issues.

2. Organizations should focus on early screening as this will help to notice any changes in individuals.

3. Provide a friendly Environment.

4. Organizations should provide a sensitive Environment as women battling with maternal mental health will not naturally speak up except situation demands for it.

5. Occupational health and safety services such as wellness, fair and interactive session should be organized to cheer up pregnant and nursing mothers.

Although statistics has shown few numbers of women undergo maternal Mental health issues during pregnancy and after birth, with Maternal Mental health awareness, companies are taught to be aware and sensitive to the few women who may find themselves in this situation.
