Safety on the job; things to never say to employees
Being a boss is never an easy or a day job, we are all just human, and sometimes we say the wrong thing in a situation. Regardless, certain things can be detrimental to employee morale and can harm the company culture. These phrases may seem unavoidable or appropriate as at the period you need to reply but can actually fracture the relationship with the employee and cause the employee to become less productive or even consider finding a new job.
To promote workplace and individual safety, improve workplace productivity, below are things employers should avoid at all costs in telling their staff.
1. Once I’m absent, nothing gets done.
The good thing about an excellent manager with good managerial skills is that they know and are always ready to deploy duty to the right people and at the right time. The workplace continues to operate smoothly even when they are not there. While it can be tempting to say this phrase in the heat of frustration, internalizing it and using it as motivation to work on more cross-training and better people’s development is ultimately much more effective.
2. We have always done it this way.
The best bosses constantly strive to improve the workplace. By the way, that something has always been done as evidence that it is being done correctly discourages improvement. Taking ideas into consideration and trying new things can help a workplace reach greater productivity levels while working to make employees feel valued for their input and insights. Also, the idea that the way a thing is being done should remain the way it should be done has never favored the change, which is the most important consideration for growth.

3. Just do it because I said so.
Every person likes to be listened to and appreciated. People tend to do less once there is a method, and the method doesn’t change. Giving reasons for assignments and processes can make employees feel like valued members of the company while mitigating feelings of the bitterness associated with performing tasks that are perceived to be inconsequential. Telling employees why things should be done a certain way can also help to broaden the employeeâs view, which may shake up ideas for improvements. The idea that employees have done things in a certain way because the employers feel so should be avoided.

4. Your colleagues noticed this about you.
Most times, the problem is not the colleagues noticing things about the other employees. While it is important to address reports and concerns brought up by employees, focusing on the behavior in a way that does not make the employee feel betrayed is generally a better approach. Providing feedback in this way can help to preserve the anonymity of the employee that came forward while dealing with the behavior in an effective way. It is better to exclude the fact a fellow employee noticed the particular, another way without involving the other employees would be a better way to solve the issue without causing havoc in the workplace.
5. You are lucky to have this job.
In the employment industry, nobody is lucky to have any form of job. Employment is a trade by barter system. The employees provide their services while the employers pay for the services provided. These phrases imply that the employee is not worthy of their job and that they are a burden on the workplace, which devalues the employee.
Everything that you say counts when you are the boss! Try to make your feedback positive and encouraging for better results.
